Rare vintage Issey Miyake 1990s sculptural pleated shawl in rust/terracotta featuring densely accordion-pleated polyester or mix with rayon (dense and heavy texture). Tubular construction and softly ruffled edges. Designed to be twisted and draped around the body or worn as a scarf or over the shoulders. Truly a museum find! Made in Japan by the master itself. It reminded me of the beautiful 1999 project by photographer Yuriko Takagi and Issey Miyake, “Pleats Please Travel Through the Planet", last photos. The project was shot in Kenya, India, China, and Morocco.
Issey Miyake (1938–2022) was a pioneering Japanese fashion designer known for combining innovative technology, sculpture, and traditional Japanese aesthetics. He founded his label in Tokyo in 1970 and became famous for his experimental approach to fabric and clothing, especially pleating, unusual silhouettes, and lightweight designs. His work blurred the line between fashion and art, emphasizing movement, comfort, and the relationship between the body and fabric. His most iconic legacy includes PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE and the influential A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) concept.
